Small Business Website Content

Writing small business content can seem like a massively daunting task.  If you have searched for this topic its unlikely that you are a copy writer by trade?  You only have about 15 seconds to get your visitors attention when they reach your website.  So, you better make sure that your content meets their expectations.

If you are determined to run a good small business website, creating a great design with engaging contents is essential.   You also need to write fresh content and post it to your site frequently.  So, lets get cracking with 10 tips for creating small business website content.

01 Google Analytics

We would recommend that you install Google Analytics onto your WordPress website. This will help you to collect an enormous amount of data about your website performance and your visitors.  This information can be used to help you make changes to your content to increase its SEO performance.

02 Keyword Research

You have to get lots of things right if you want your website content to be SEO friendly.  One thing that you must do is ensure that researched which keywords and phrases you are going to try and rank for.  There are a number of keyword research tools out there, but the good ones have to be paid for.  Some of the better ones include, Semrush, Googles Keyword Planner and Mox.

The other option is to get a small business marketing agency to carry out the keyword research for you.  This service will cost a bit of money but will probably save you time in the long run.  We offer this as part of our small business branding service.

03 Know Your Customer

So, now that you know which key words and phrases you are going to use, who are you writing for?  If you are using your small business website to make money, you need to focus your content on potential customers.  If you have reached this stage in your business, you really should have a clear understanding of your customer avatar.  It would be an error to write your content without knowing some basics like:

  • Who are they?
  • How old are they?
  • What kind of income and education do they have?
  • Are they predominantly one gender?
  • What are they looking for in the companies they do business with?
  • What matters to them?
  • When would they use your product or service and why would they need it?

04 Customer Focus

Focus on writing your website content always aiming at your customer avatar.  Be guided by their interests, questions or needs because that’s is why they are visiting your website.

05 Small business Website Content SEO

For Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) purposes you small business website content will need to be at least 300 words in length.  This is the minimum in order to rank well with the search engines.  We would recommend posts up to 1,000 words as this will help with organic traffic.

06 Use Headings

Use headings to capture your visitor s interest in the subject of your content.  This is because most people scan a webpage within 15 seconds and if nothing attracts their interest they will leave.

Readers need to understand what your post or page is about, and so does Google.  WordPress transforms the headings you put in your content into their respective HTML tags (<h1>, <h2>, <h3> and so on).  You must make sure that we get the basic structure right.  Follow this protocol: template sets your post title is an <h1> tag, and that you’re not using <h1> tags anywhere else in your page or your post content.

Your post content should then ‘flow’ naturally; for example, large, significant headings should use <h2> tags, subsections should use <h3> tags, and then subsequent new sections should use <h2>.

07 Stay on Point

When writing your small business content stick to one point of conversation at a time.  Keep your sentences short and on point.  Remember your visitor has found you by typing in a specific question to Google.  Paragraphs should be short as well, about 4 or 5 sentences each.

08 Check Spelling & Grammer

Check and recheck again for any spelling or grammar errors.  We always get someone else to check over our website content.  A fresh pair of eyes is always helpful, and they might see something you have overlooked.

09 Images & Video

Images and video will really help your website content to stand out.  Make sure that you only use really good quality images or video.  Images and video need to be in the right format for your website.  If you don’t resize and condense image files for example, it could significantly affect your websites loading speed.  Slower websites will increase your bounce rate and more visitors will leave without seeing your content.
